1986 Ford class C Country Squire and the generator is an Onan Emerald Genset I
Hi there I hope someone here can help me with this Onan gen I have because I am at my end with it, So here it is my gen has worked great for years and then all the sudden on day i started it and after releasing the switch back to the middle position the gen died and quit running, I have checked everything I can think of and it does it with both switches the one inside and the one outside, so it starts and will stay running if i hold the button in! but at the time i let off the switch it dies! Any ideas guys.

Go to where the plug for the inside switch plugs into the gen set outside and after you unplug it use outside switch to start it. If it works OK, check the wiring between the inside switch panel and the plug outside. A couple of years ago i had a nest of mice make it with most of the insulation off the wiring itself and that along with some what we would call teddy bear cactus. I have a different name for it but it makes a nest that the snakes will not go into!! good luck and hope this it, Dan

Hi Ed, I had the same problem on a 1993 of 1996 Winnebago. As long as I held the switch in the gen would run. I had to have, what I call the circuit board replaced. On a hot November day in 2007 while boondocking and both ACs running, the genset shut off. I found the trouble to be the coil. I ordered one from "Flight Systems". It operated fine for one year and then melted. I sent it back to "Flight Systems" and they quickly sent me a new one free of charge.
I would first check every thing I could and if the coil checks out fine, I would remove the circuit board and send it to "Flight Systems" for them to test for $25.
Good Luck
