Well I have started on installing new Velvac power and heated mirrors on my 310.

So far I have made alum. wedge's so they do not tilt toward the coach. I also had to use a larger backing plate for the larger base the Velvac mirrors have. I used SS allen head bolts that hold the new plate in place. I used the old mounting holes on the old mirror mounts. On my coach the mirror support was welded to the alum. frame work on top and bottom.

Along with the mirrors, I have found a Fire Stick no ground plane CB molded side mount ant. set up. I have just started to mount that today in front of the drivers mirror, and don't have any photos yet. It does look good so far. Will have to do more support on the back side.

Will keep posted of new phots when I get them.

So far so go, wish me luck!!

Wow! Very nice installation. I really like those wedges. I'm lucky enough to have the power mirrors on my 345 but have always wanted to "upgrade" to mirrors that stand off the coach a little more than the stock mirrors.

    Oh, welcome to the site!

    Thanks Steve.
Looks like you have a making of a great site for us crazy enough to tackel some of the old classics!

I looked around at mirrors like Remco and such, but liked the larger mirrror area of the Velvac and massive mounting arms they use.
My mirrors did not come with the turn signal lights, but I installed some LED lights at the location the factory would have had theirs.

    Thanks for the welcome.

Here is what the Firestick is going to look like. No wires outside and the mount looks good and strong. I made another alum. wedge to keep the 4' antenna straight.

I used a 2" x 4 1/2" 12 gage alum. backing plate for more support of the outer skin.

With this antenna, No Ground Plane, with the radio within a couple of feet, you CAN NOT cut the wire! It is made for the NGP system and must be kept intact. I will just have to loop the extra wire and tuck it out of the way.

Like the nice clean look of the mount!

Chris - I have a new set of Velvac mirrors to install and I like the wedge you fabricated to keep the brackets and mirror heads level. The best I can tell, it will take about a 1/4" at the top and a 1/16" at the bottom, is that what you ended up with? There is a nice mounting gasket template in the instructions to use for a pattern but I will probably try to find a fab shop to make them since I don't have the material or know-how.

    Hey Rick.

I used almost a full 1/2 over the hight of the base.

Steve wants met to make some up and let people know that I have them, but don't have the dimensions for the base profile in relation to the holes. When I made mine up I just traced around the base after holes were put in, then cut sanded and polished.

One of the things that you will need to pay attention to, is keep the flat to the mirror base and the mounting holes square with the mounting base. Put the machined taper to the coach skin.

The extra backing plate I used was 1/4 in aluminum and used the old mounting holes to keep it in place. The area behind the backing plate and skin of the back holes, I used a epoxy stick as a filler.

I'm re-carpeting the drivers area, so removing the inside walls was no big deal. You might get around that by cutting holes in the area and covering with a patch, but it was nice to have all the room to work with while figuring out the backing plates and routing the wires.

Let me know if I can help in anyway!

    Well new mirrors work great.

Just about lost the right mirror to a trucker that crossed into our lane in Chattanooga going to the Springstream!

Got him on the CB (new antenna works great) and he stopped so we could take a look at it. Nothing broke and mirror swiveled in like it was suppose to. Just have to buff out some white paint off the plastic now!

He was real good about it and was even going to try to buff it out right on the side of the road. I told him it was ok long as nothing was broke!

So one has its first battle scars!

Hi CMA nice job on the mirrors and cb antenna. 1 word of advice don't coil the antenna wire. it chokes the signal going out  instead run it in long s shape design.it has happened to me.spent $50 at a cb shop to find out why my cb did not put out very far.

Thanks Bob. Yes I took care of the extra (most all of the lead) like you said. Firestick was very good and explaining what to do with the extra. With the no ground plane antenna, seems to work good.

Here is a shot of the war scar on the mirror.

Recently we mounted a pair of Ramco standard bracket mirrors to an Airstream.  All the original mirror bolts were rusted in place and had to be cut off.  The angle on the bracket was correct so all that was needed was to relocate the mounting holes and screw them in with self tapping sheet metal screws.  The plate on the inside was large enough to take all 4 holes.  It's too bad the Velvac mirrors do not have the proper angle. You would think there would be enough call that they would make a modified head for us, Ramco does.  I have made those "wedges" and that will work just fine, it's just the added time it takes to do it.

This is my first post here on this forum, a friend/customer turned me onto you guys.  For the past 14 years I have been first person involved in the restoration and updating of the classic GMC motorhome.  We have also worked with several Airstreams, Revcons, Argosy stuff too as a diversion.  I have a shop in Orlando Florida but for the purposes of this forum I came here as an old Motorhome enthusiast, I own several GMC's and an Airstream Tradewind trailer.  I also an attracted for some reason to collectible motorcycles and also work on those.

I am here to both learn and help if I can.  I am involved in several forums on different subjects, I see them as a great place to interract with other people with similar niche interests.  I hope I can be an asset to this forum.  Let me know if I can help,

    Jim Bounds
