Was surprised there is no Boondocking or Dry Camping section on this site. If there was I would have posted this there to get conversation going about batteries and solar panels.

Oh well, I read up a lot all over the Web about 6v VS 12v batteries:

I finally just went with two 6 volts connected in a series b/c of there ability to handle more abuse (draining them low often). But I'm really quite dumb (but learning) about electricity. I used a 4 gauge wire to connect my two 6 volts, and that is what brings me to my question. Is that the right gauge? I was told by a fellow camper to use 2 gauge but couldn't find any so I crossed my fingers and used the smaller 4 gauge. Anyone have any thoughts?

Need a "Boondocking and Dry Camping" forum.  Heads up Steve.  That's a good idea!

Your 4 guage should be fine. The easiest way to check is to do some running about for a few minutes and then check to see how hot the wires are. If too hot to handle go to a 2 guage. If just warm you are fine.  That's the trial by heat method.
