Worked on the old ICE MAKER today. The maintenance manual I have....which is not a very good one....but it made it sound pretty simple to remove the ice maker....come to find out you have to remove the whole refrigeration unit to get the ice maker out. From the outward appearence of my ice maker...I doubt very much that it would work. The front part of the IM was just dangling from wires when I bought the MH....I'm sure PO was having trouble with it. My question to all ....do you think an ice maker is really needed. I mean...I know it would be nice....but do you really use them much....and also....are they very dependable. I'm pretty sure mine is beyond hope of ever working again....so I would be looking at a new/ used one. Anybody got a rough idea what one would cost. I think the IM cooling unit would work without the IM being installed..... I almost think it would be more useful just to keep things cold than to make ice cubes. What's your ideas.

Ours had a hole where the ice makers was... Found one on Ebay, and know we will use it non stop in summer trips. If had a non working unit, would get rebuilt. Many places will do it, make it better than new. Is not amonia like gas fridge, just regular freon. My new one cost $250, but that was a Tuesday afternoon ending auction, not Saturday night. |

Oh...removal... Mine was all one unit. Just a power plug and a water line. Everything else was all bolted together...kinda 'L' shapped. Just slid in and had a few screws around front lip.

Sounds like your IM is lots dif than mine. In fact I have not been able to "completely" remove mine yet. If I was convinced there was no hope for it...I could get it out.....but I would have to cut the temp sense tube that comes out the back of the refrigeration unit and goes down the back side into the compressor section . It is crimped in place on the ice cube maker unit....so that end does not disconnect....and the other end that goes down to compressor section has a small little box like unit connected to the end. This box like unit is too big to get through the hole leading to the ice maker. Of course I could cut the tube if I were junking the ice maker. Haven't really thought about what I want to do with this yet.....I will work more on it today

That does sound different... Do you think they put it in from outside? |

Oh no....it was installed from inside the MH.....I have the complete refrigeration unit out and setting on my engine hood.....BUT....I can't get the ice maker out of the refrigeration unit. the only thing stopping me is the fact that the sense tube is permanetly attached to the ice maker....it then goes through a small hole in the back of the refrig unit.....down the back and attaches inside the compressor unit. Keep in mind....when I say refrigeration unit.....I mean the box that contains the ice maker....not the refrigerator... they are two seperate units. A picture would say a thousand words....sorry

Well...I finally got the ice maker out. I found that the sense tube that was holding me up was actually a tube within a tube. With a little bit of a tug the sense tube sepated and I was able to get the ice maker out..... now I have to see if I can get the ice maker to work.
Another subject....can anyone tell me what stripper solution should I use to strip the paint off the MH? I would like to see what shape the aluminum is in before I make up my mind if I want to paint or not.

Why would you want to strip? Paint or Polish? Is it blistering? May want to primer over and paint, good base, already stuck to the aluminum. Go to http://www.por15.com/ I have used POr Strip several time works great? |

The present paint job is in pretty bad shape....very blotchy.... it appears there is no primer coat under the paint. Just looks like paint on aluminum. I'm sure this is the original paint job but I can't imagine the manufacture would not apply a primer coat. Anyway.....I have to do something. I guess I never thought about just painting over present paint job. If indeed there is no primer coat under the old paint...I'd be concerned that the new paint won't stick either.
