We have to go pick up a 1998 Explorer with a blown engine next week...
Kids on the way back from Spring Brake @ FtLauderdale 'lost power' at Orlando.
Shop says $5000 for engine...they passed and rented a car returning home.

I'm elected.
My question is about drive shaft...
I'm very familer with GMs, (much better at fixing than spelling too)
Not sure how drive shaft U-joint attaches at rear end on Fords...
U-bolts or straps?
Bolt size? 12 point? 6point? 3/8"? 7/16"?
Bringing a bunch of tools, just not know what to expect.

I'm on my second Explorer and I have 183000 miles on this one.  I tow mine on a tow dolly and I have to remove the drive shaft to do so.  Each end of the drive shaft is fastened with four cap screws.  I forget the size, (probably half inch or so), but my standard socket set has the sizes for it.  You'll need a breaker bar to break them loose the first time.  I think Ford puts lock tite on them.  I also used red paint and marked the shaft and transmission and rear end so as to position them the same way when I put them back in.  Not sure if Ford balances them or not, just not taking any chances.  The toughest part is getting under the darn thing.  Once up on the tow dolly its not too bad but other wise its tight.

Ohhhh...
Good stuff!
Would not thought about marking alignments.
Cap Screws? Are these same as socket heads, that take allen wrench?

I think they have around 150 on this one.
Have not seen yet, just going by 21 year olds discription...
Smoke, noise, loss of acceleration...and Ford dealer says new engine.

No, not allen screw heads.  In cap screw I mean that there is no nut on the back of the bolt.  I just used a standard socket set.  They were really hard to break loose the first time.  Take a big, long breaker bar.  You'll probably need it.  A side note is that ford sells a kit that will let you tow an Explorer four wheels down with the drive shaft in place.  Only costs a hundred dollars. All it does is  set the  transfer case to nuetral.  I wanted to do that to mine and then found out that  there was a short period of time that they bought transmissions from a different vendor  and that these were not adaptable.  I was just lucky enough to have one of those.

BobChevy89...
Thanks a bunch!
Are you north of Orlando?
We may stop by on the way back.

We are making the trip in the Liberator as a test run on the new Master Cylinder that is painted and drying rat now.
Got some great photos of this procedure.
Man...was it yuccky!

I think all will be OK.
Only thing I can think of being tough, is getting it on the dolly.
Depends on if there is a slope or not.
Will bring come-a-long just in case.
