Hi All,

Anyone know what the California emissions requirements are? MH is 1982 Airstream 280 with 454 gas engine. My dad did put a Banks system on it some years back. I will be bringing the MH in from Oregon. If I remember correctly it has air pump and I think I remember seeing air tubes still going to headers. Did these years have catalytic converters? I've googled, but can't find a single thing on this subject for calif/year/model/engine.

Thanks
Dean

82 did not have cats (AFAIK). The AIR system and EGR was the extent of emisisons control at the time. The system essentially pumps fresh air into the exhaust ports (up inside the heads) which re-ignited any unburnt fuel as it left the exhaust port.

Parts are still available, but as you cna imagine, this system caused a lot of exhaust turbulence and increased the manifold temps.

A.I.R Started out around the 66 era, No cats until (Maybe) 88...My 87 had none.

My 83 (454) doesn't have a EGR valve but you might have one...The 87 did for sure.

NON egr engines will run stronger in certain conditions but IF your running flatout
up a hill with near zero vacuum the EGR is out of the loop anyway....

Thanks for the info everyone. This makes me feel better about bringing the MH into Calif. I hope my eyes were correct that I really did see the A.I.R. tubes still going to the headers that are on it.
