Frequently I hear people talk about the improved gas mileage or increased horse power obtained by changing the computer chip on their engine.  I have never seen anything on the motorhome forums about this.  would this be because motorhomes don't/didn't come under the same regulations as passenger cars and therefor were not de-tuned at the factory to meet some regulation?

I have a 1993 Airstream Legacy with the 454 Chevy engine.  I average 8.2 MPG when I drive properly and I am not complaining.  But improving either performance or MPG would appeal to me.

I wonder if the older units have a "chip" to change.

Yep, If a computer is in the new'r rigs a new/original chip can be reprogramed for your specific needs/wants....
