This subject I know was covered in the Airstreams Forums, but for the benifit of ALL Classic motor homers, I am sure this subject is close to our hearts.
On my '82 build 310 with a 454 I have just passed the 13 MPG ( Imperial), and still working on it. |

Wow, that's pretty darn good.
My 77 20' 454 gets about 12 MPG.
However, I have not filled it up with the 10% Ethanol gas we have here now, We get less MPG with that stuff in it! |

| We get about 9 when not towing our car and 8 when towing. We keep it between 55 and 60 mph. When we started out we got about 6. Of course, this is in the 345 at about 16,500 lbs with a "modified" 454. 13 is diesel territory. |

| Mileage on the diesel runs between 12 and 16mpg. Depends if I tow and how big a hurry I'm in. |

Strange! I would have thought that diesel would be better than that - at least 18-20mpg even US gallon, perhaps I am expecting too much....
I am hoping that by exchanging the Roof AC's for the smaller Cool-O-Matic units and changing cooling fans to electric, that I get at least another 1.5 to 2 mpg on the 13. Something to to aim at...
It will interesting to see what difference the Hedmans make when I get round to fitting them. |

| The biggest advantage to the diesel is it's long life and torque/HP. Mileage is improved over a gas engine, IE: mine would have gotten maybe 6 with the original engine and we get 9-10 regullary with the diesel, plust the added performance. Pretty tough to get a diesel up into the teens in a motorhome. Get about 14 to 16 in my Ford crew cab dually with the 7.3 IH Navistar and a banks turbo. Hook it to a big 5th and that mileage will come down, but you still have the better performance and long life. A 460 in that truck would do more like 6-8. |
