Hi all, I'm new to this so I'm just going to jump in and go for it. I have a 1972 dodge class A, the vin tag says fargo desoto???. When I parked it several months ago it ran fine. Know when I put the key switch in the on position after a second or two it automaticaly starts cranking the starter motor and when it starts the starter stays ingaged. I've chassed wires and being fairly unfamiliar with wiring on a motorhome I'm perplexed. I've eliminated the ignition switch as the problem. Theres a small box (about 1"by1.5") that the main power goes into then to the starter and ignition, is this a solanoid of some sort. Any ideas, I'm sure it's probably something simple, I just don't know what that simple thing is. Thanks.

Welcome!

Sounds like the pin is not retracting. What engine do you have? Original?

It has a dodge 413, I think it's original. Yeah, the pin definently isn't retracting. But when I disconect the small wire going into the box I mentioned earlier the pin will retract and engine runs fine. Any thoughts.

I don't have pics but I certainly can take some. It's a little embarrassing, needs lots of work outside. Old vinyl covered sides are peeling off, Being a custom woodworker by trade, my ambition is to make the first wood side RV I've ever seen. I've already started the project so maybe I can post pics as I go, if theres a spot for that kind of stuff. Thanks for the tip on the web site, I'll go check it out. P.S. This is the first non GM vehicle I've worked on.

You can post a pic here or in the gallery. Don't be shy about it, we all restore, so we love project pics!

Great, I'll get some pics asap. I visited the web site you posted, It's great, very informative. I don't think though, that the problem lies with the starter motor. It functions properly when I bypass the component that all the wires run through. I think my next step is to trace the wiring back from the starter to find out where the gremlin is. So,,, a hunting I will go.
