Just recently purchased a 2000 Airstream land yacht. According to the IP gauge, the engine is running at 160 degrees. This seems too cold. Should I change the thermostat? If so, to what temp?

Is it diesel or gas?  Either way that seems too cold.  I guess I would first find out if the guage is faulty but changing the thermostat wouldn't hurt anything.

May want to check the gauge...
Is this running down the road? or at idle?
160^ is tough to maintain on a gas, easy to on a diesel.

OEM gages not known to be very accurate!

After putting in the 3rd 7.4 in a Winne work horse chassis, the wifes uncle put in SW gages for the water temp. and Oil pressure.

The Oil pressure is close to the OEM, but the water temp is most of the time way off! While driveing it down here from Omaha, after he passed away, I had the OEM water temp gage drop to nunt'n, and the SW kept reading at 190 degrees!

After their problems, not a bad idea to have back up gages in you have an OEM set up!

The unit is a big block "rat" motor. Gas. The 160 is the same at idle or going down the road. My guess is that some previous owner changed the thermostat thinking that running the engine cooler is better. As we know, hotter within some limits is better for the engine and fuel economy. Does anyone know what the OEM thermostat was?

The Chevy P30 manual for my 86 454 says 180.

I like 180^ too...
A few GMs started coming with 192^ around that time, too close to trouble for me.
Go with 180^

I'd go with a new thermostat and look for 180º

I have a NAPA 180 degree in my 454...no problem. But, I am contemplating the Mr. Gasket balanced-type thermostat. Anyone else use a balanced type thermostat?
