Hi! Along with the 345 I still have a 73 Travco motorhome with a 440. My Q jet died and I had it replaced with an Edlebrock intake and new carb...net result was an increase of 25 % in fuel economy. Both items came from E-bay with a total cost of less than $300.00. If your rebuild does not work out you might try another option. I would still be driving the Travco except the wife got closterfobic at the La. crawfish festivel and likes the wrap around windows in the bedroom on the Airstream. Travco 13.5 miles per gallon Airstream 6.5 on flat road.

Pete, I remember reading that recently. Was that here or at one of the Travco sites. That solution is on my list, but my Rochester is brand new and I am spending a ton elsewhere on the unit. Thanks for the input. I am having a ball playing with this thing. Larry |

Quick question. I have a Rochester on my Chrysler 440. Do you think the spring would benifit my set-up? I am going through the ignition section and trying to see if it applies to my 440. Is anyone buying the big tenpack of springs? We could share costs. Also, looking at the diagrams, I think I can change the spring while the carb is installed. Is this advisable. The engine and carb are fairly new (2000 miles) and I don't want to upset any of the good work that the previous owner did.
Thanks,
Larry
I would be happy to supply all of the money and split the 10 pack IF I could find a dealor that carrys them .
Another test item which will fit into your dash is a vacuum gauge (Indexed in 1 pound increments) which will inform you on the different vacuum levels as you cruise, Climb and others items and since a stock Rochester power rods start to pull up around 11 inches of vacuum you will soon find out.
I did start a thread on ignitions BUT never expanded on it.....Please get the ignition working correctly and LOCK it down then the carb is next.........
I DO NOT like pulling a carb down while still bolted to the engine.......Little do-dads have a habit of dropping into the intake, Just take a few more minutes and remove it and set it on a clean bench.
Some of the "Guru's" are able to trim a coil or so off of the power piston spring but without knowing what your engine varibles are (Level, Climbing and so forth) it's a guess and only that.

| Where can I get such a vacuum gauge and where does it connect to the carb? Are they expensive items? |

Please browse the above link, You will be able to find the size and price that will please you and the pocket book.
Maybe...Just maybe you have a fitting on the back of the carb (full manifold vacuum) and if not just "T" into a full manifold source.

Jim, I found some springs locally....sort-of (40 min one way) and I am going to get them someday soon. They have 4 pieces. I will be happy to send you a couple if you want. I will post again when I pick them up. Larry |

Thanks Larry
A small tip for everyone......My engine stumbled (running out of fuel) so every filter including the carb was changed and cut open for inspection.
That stink'n brand new tank which has driven me "nutso" still has some very fine (now) metal particles in it and the carb filter was in BAD shape.....

| Ok should I rebuild the old Qjet or replace it? 84 454 with headers turbo 400 trans I am getting right at 8 mpg towing a mini van on a dolly. I am an old hot rodder so rebuild doesn't scare me, but I am leaning towards replacement of intake and carb .I have never payed to much attention to mpg with intake and carb swaps. I saw one post here for a Mopar that increased 25% has anyone got any real life figures for the Chevy? |
