We go way back with motor homes. My dad made our first one out of a 1952 GMC school bus. In-line 6 gas engine with 4 speed. When that blew up we put a 348 and power glide. We had the water tanks on the outside on the roof 6" O.D. aluminum tubes on both sides. I will have to try and find a photo and scan it in for the post.
The families next MoHo was a 68 or 69 Champion! Now that is a brand that you do not see around anymore! It set on a Dodge frame. The family still had this after I got married and one time when the wife and I was out in it, I clipped the side on one of the narrow bridges over Lake of the Ozarks.
The last one my dad made was about 15 years ago. A 1972 GMC Silver Eagle. 318 Detroit diesel and he put a 4 speed Allison in it. I should be able to find some photos of that one as well.
When we bought the Airstream 310, I told the family, "At least this one started as a Motor Home!"
Oh the memories!
