Spent the weekend and a few nights this week on removing the rear closet (in prep for the rear sofas) and refacing the kitchen cabinets.
Getting my shop setup first took a lot longer than anticipated. But I was surprised at how quickly things went with the shop organized, the table saw aligned, the panel cutting jib made, etc. These cabinet faces are made of 3/4" PB with white melamine on each side, faced on each edge with 3/4" melimine iron on banding. The knobs are from target.
For the most part, this is a refacing project. The old cabinet frames and drawers are all being reused but the face style and hardware are all being upgraded and modernized. The design goal for the kitchen was to achieve a "CCD" inspired look. Let me know what you think. |

The rear bedroom is on it's second revision. The original concept created a "built in" U shaped bench but I could never figure our how to gracefully convert the bench seating into a bed again. My goal has been to engineer things in a way where they appear to be as "factory" as possible....meaning no goofy pull out this leg and install this board and prop up this latch, etc. Finding the futon hinges was they key for me to developing two opposing sofas that perform like RV sofas converting into beds, but don't cost $1700 each.
This change also allows me to install two full size opposing sofas instead of a "pigmy sofa" on the curbside like before. I plan to use the frame rails and the bed platforms but I'll have to cut down the backs to fit. I also need to adjust the fore/aft positions of the closet bulkheads to make all of this fit perfectly and trim out nicely.
Here are some pics of my initial "dry fit" |

Thanks guys. I'll have more pics tomorrow. Finished the cabinet refacing today after work...all new recessed hinges, new pulls, etc. I really like the look. Next for the kitchen is the counter/sink which should not take too long. I'm thinking stainless for a counter top and replacing the current sink with a round one. oard Tonight I worked on removing the shower pan. I'm not sure why but someone at Airstream decided this needed to hold up in a nuclear war so there are eight screws on each SIDE holding it in....the forward side is in the pantry...so I need to drill some holes through some of the chip board spacer just to get at them.
On the upside, I found a trim kit for the delta shower fixture and a replacement pop up drain. Can't wait to refinish the pan and re-vinyl the wall.
Suzanne is running the Louisville half marathon this weekend and both my son and I have our birthdays so I don't think I'll get too much done. I'm hoping to sneek in there and stain the remaining frames and bulkheads. |
